Club de Golf La Cañada in Guadiaro is regarded by the Spanish golf federation as the first public golf course on the Costa del Sol. The club was founded in 1982 and its present 18-hole layout combines two separately designed nines. Robert Trent Jones Sr designed the original nine, which now form the back nine, while Dave Thomas designed the later extension that now forms the front nine.
The resulting course is par 71, not par 72 as previously stored in the database. La Cañada developed from the golf culture of the local Guadiaro community and differs from the private resort clubs surrounding nearby Sotogrande. Practice facilities include a 250-metre driving range, two putting greens and an approach area.

La Cañada grew from the golf culture of Guadiaro, a community closely connected with the neighbouring Sotogrande courses. The club was founded in 1982 and developed as a public alternative in an area dominated by private golf.
Robert Trent Jones Sr designed the original nine. Dave Thomas later designed the expansion, creating a composite 18-hole course whose two halves reflect different design periods.
The club expanded from nine to 18 holes and later added its clubhouse and practice infrastructure.
La Cañada remains a public-access community golf club accepting both subscribers and visiting green-fee golfers.
