The course currently represented by this database record is Phillip Island Golf Club at Cowes, the successor to the organisation formerly named Cowes Golf Club. Australian Business Register records confirm that the incorporated entity used the Cowes Golf Club name before becoming Phillip Island Golf Club Inc. The present course traces its modern history to 1950, when 25 local residents and business owners financed the purchase of Bill Smith's 78-acre dairy farm and volunteers began converting the property into an 18-hole golf course.
The first official competition at the new Cowes Golf Club was held that year. Today the course measures 6,003 metres and plays to par 72. It is within walking distance of central Cowes and operates as a member club that also welcomes green-fee visitors.
The course is an 18-hole parkland golf course. It plays to par 72, 6,003m (6,565 yards). The course originally opened in 1950. It is open to the public. On-site facilities include Pro Shop, Club Hire, Golf Cart Rental, Clubhouse, Restaurant, Bar.
Golf under the Cowes name existed on Phillip Island earlier in the twentieth century, but the direct origin of the present club and course is the 1950 purchase of a 78-acre dairy farm from Bill Smith. Twenty-five residents and business owners each invested £100, and volunteers built fairways, tees, drainage and a basic clubhouse.
The organisation developed from Cowes Golf Club into today's Phillip Island Golf Club. Australian Business Register history records the incorporated entity as Cowes Golf Club Inc before its current Phillip Island Golf Club Inc name took effect on 5 March 2019.
Phillip Island Golf Club now operates the 18-hole, par-72 course at 34-44 Settlement Road, Cowes, with member competitions and public green-fee access.
