Barryscourt is one of the named 18-hole combinations within Fota Island Resort's 27-hole parkland complex in County Cork. The resort's original modern course was designed in 1993 by Christy O'Connor Jr. and Peter McEvoy, extensively upgraded under Jeff Howes from 1998 to 1999, and supplemented by nine additional holes designed by Howes and opened in July 2007.
Those 27 holes can be arranged as Deerpark, Belvelly and Barryscourt configurations. The established Barryscourt scorecard is par 73 and measures 7,362 yards from the Championship tees, with Medal, Society and Forward alternatives. Fota Island's wider golf facilities include a modern academy with TrackMan, strength and conditioning facilities and PGA coaching, as well as a clubhouse and Pro Shop.
The course is an 18-hole parkland golf course. It plays to par 73, 6,732m (7,362 yards). Designed by Christy O'Connor Jr. and Peter McEvoy, the course originally opened in 2007. It is open to the public. On-site facilities include Suite, Lodge, Golf academy, Driving range, TrackMan, Strength and conditioning gym, PGA coaching, Pro Shop, and 6 more.
Golf has a much older association with Fota Island than the modern resort. Historical references place golf on the estate in the nineteenth century and again in the early twentieth century. The present era began when a new 18-hole course was developed in 1993 by Christy O'Connor Jr.
and Peter McEvoy.
The modern courses are routed through mature parkland. Strategic bunkering, contoured greens and water are integrated into the estate landscape rather than attempting to reproduce a coastal links.
Beginning in 1998, Jeff Howes Golf Designs carried out an 18-month redevelopment to European Tour standards, rebuilding all 18 greens, redeveloping tees and redesigning several holes. The course reopened in September 1999. In July 2007 nine additional holes designed by Howes opened, expanding Fota to 27 holes.
Those holes allowed three 18-hole configurations: Deerpark, Belvelly and Barryscourt.
Fota Island has hosted the Irish Open in 2001, 2002 and 2014, along with other professional and amateur events. Those Irish Opens are associated with the Deerpark championship configuration rather than Barryscourt specifically.
Barryscourt remains one of the selectable combinations within Fota Island Resort's 27-hole golf operation, supported by the Fota Island Golf Academy, Pro Shop and resort facilities.
