About Glynneath Golf Club

Glynneath Golf Club is an 18-hole, par-71 course at Penygraig, Pontneddfechan, near Glynneath in South Wales. The club describes the layout as a mixture of parkland and woodland following the rolling terrain of the Vale of Neath. It measures just under 6,100 yards, with mature trees prominent throughout and water hazards and bunkers also in play.

The club was formally founded in 1931 after its founders selected Penygraig Farm as the site. Some holes from the early course remain in use. Glynneath is associated closely with Welsh entertainer Max Boyce, a former club captain and long-serving honorary president.

Origins

The club traces its formation to 5 May 1931, when a meeting at the offices of local newspaper The Star formally established Glynneath Golf Club. An earlier site near the Angel Hotel at Pontneathvaughan proved unsuitable because the farmer would not permit Sunday play. The founders subsequently secured land at Penygraig Farm for an annual rent of £30 and developed the course there.

The club says some of its original holes remain in play.

Recognition

Glynneath has developed a notable association with Welsh entertainer Max Boyce M.B.E., a former captain and long-serving honorary president. The Max Boyce Classic has attracted prominent sports figures including Sir Ian Botham, Sir Gareth Edwards and Ian Woosnam.
