Lake Malaren's South Course in Shanghai's Baoshan District is the present Masters Course, an 18-hole par-72 parkland layout created through a comprehensive Nicklaus Design reconstruction of the former South/Lake course. Nicklaus Design says construction and redesign were completed in 16 months and lists the resulting course as opening in 2011. Jack Nicklaus II served as lead designer, with Nicklaus Design also crediting Jack Nicklaus and his son with the finished Masters Course.
The design incorporates trees, natural grasses, lakes, streams and rolling ground with substantial elevation changes. It immediately became a tournament venue: the Lake Malaren Shanghai Masters was staged there in October 2011, followed by the European Tour's BMW Masters. Nicklaus Design reported a 7,606-yard championship configuration in 2014.
The course is an 18-hole parkland golf course. Designed by Jack Nicklaus, the course originally opened in 2011. It is open to the public. On-site facilities include Golf Academy.
The present course grew from an existing South/Lake layout at Lake Malaren rather than from an untouched site. Ahead of a planned international tournament programme, the club commissioned Nicklaus Design to reconstruct its existing courses. The South Course became the principal focus of that work.
Nicklaus Design describes the concept as a championship course that could test elite players through varied shots and strategic choices without becoming unsuitable for average golfers. The rebuilt course uses trees, natural grasses, lakes and streams together with rolling terrain and meaningful elevation changes to create its parkland character.
The redesign and construction programme was completed in approximately 16 months. Nicklaus Design lists the course as opening in 2011, and it staged the Lake Malaren Shanghai Masters in October that year. It subsequently became the venue for the European Tour's BMW Masters.
Nicklaus Design reported that the course appeared in Golf Digest China's 2012-2013 Top 10 New Golf Courses in China. Its tournament programme brought leading international players to the property soon after the redesign.
The Masters Course remains the Nicklaus-designed southern layout at the 36-hole Lake Malaren facility, paired with the Forest/North Course.
