Golf in Llandrindod Wells began in the late nineteenth century as part of the spa town's visitor economy. A nine-hole course was laid out near the Pump House Hotel in 1889. A new course on higher ground was subsequently developed, with Harry Vardon engaged to design the layout.
H. Taylor.
Vardon's brief was associated with using the elevated site and its extensive views. The resulting routing follows naturally undulating upland ground rather than relying on constructed hazards. James Braid subsequently altered the layout.
The club has received modern recognition in Welsh and British course rankings, including praise for its unusual bunkerless architecture.
The course remains an 18-hole par-69 layout and retains the unconventional, exposed character established by its early architects.
