About Maungakiekie Golf Course

Maungakiekie Golf Club is an 18-hole Auckland club whose present course occupies freehold land at Mount Roskill. The club traces its history to 1909, when it was formed after Auckland Golf Club left One Tree Hill for Middlemore. After several decades around One Tree Hill and Cornwall Park, Maungakiekie was required to leave that property in 1943 and purchased its present site.

The club commissioned British architect Charles H. Alison of Colt, Alison & Morrison to design the replacement course. Alison worked remotely from contour plans and climatic information, and members carried out substantial construction work themselves during wartime conditions.

The course is an 18-hole parkland golf course. It plays to par 70, 5,690m, course rating 69.5 and slope rating 120. Designed by Charles H. Alison, the course originally opened in 1946. It is semi-private, welcoming both members and visitors. On-site facilities include Golf Shop, Putting Green, Practice Area, Practice Bunker, Golf Cart Hire, Club Hire, Trundler Hire, Clubhouse.

Origins

Maungakiekie was formed on 5 October 1909 after Auckland Golf Club moved from One Tree Hill to Middlemore. The new club initially operated a 10-hole course in the One Tree Hill Domain, expanding to 18 holes after leasing additional Cornwall Park land in 1911. During the following decades its history became intertwined with the development of Titirangi Golf Club before the two organisations were formally separated in 1931.

Did You Know?
The Prince of Wales, later King Edward VIII, played the club's former One Tree Hill course in 1920 with Lord Louis Mountbatten.

Design Philosophy

After losing its Cornwall Park tenancy, the club sought advice from former secretary Sloan Morpeth, then secretary of Commonwealth Golf Club in Australia. Morpeth recommended Charles Alison of Colt, Alison & Morrison. Alison designed the new Mount Roskill course remotely from England using contour plans together with information on prevailing wind, rainfall and humidity.

Development

Cornwall Park Trustees gave notice in 1942 requiring the club to leave its course. Despite a public petition carrying more than 9,000 signatures, the decision stood. Maungakiekie purchased land at Mount Roskill in 1943.

Wartime shortages meant much of the construction was carried out through member working bees; club records state that 14 greens were laid in a single day. The course opened for play in 1946.

Recognition

The club notes that the present Maungakiekie course and Alister MacKenzie's Titirangi course represent New Zealand examples of two architects associated with Harry Colt's design tradition.

Today

Maungakiekie remains on its Mount Roskill property, operating an 18-hole course with visitor access alongside member-reserved periods on weekends.
