Pupuke Golf Club is an 18-hole, par-70 course on Auckland's North Shore, laid out across 44.5 hectares of Centennial Park in Campbells Bay. The layout splits in character: one nine winds through native bush, the other opens up to views across the Hauraki Gulf, with undulating, elevated greens that add difficulty beyond the card yardage. From the back (blue) markers the course measures 5,446 metres (course rating 70.1, slope 119), with white and yellow tees playing progressively shorter.
The par-3 17th, a downhill hole to a green guarded by bunkers, is the course's most talked-about hole. Pupuke is a semi-private club — members share the course with green-fee visitors and members' guests — with a clubhouse housing a bar, café and bistro. Practice facilities include a driving range, putting green and practice bunker, with PGA coaching available through the club's golf academy.
The course is an 18-hole parkland golf course. It plays to par 70, 5,446m (5,956 yards), course rating 70.1 and slope rating 119. The course originally opened in 1914. It is semi-private, welcoming both members and visitors. On-site facilities include Full Membership, Junior Membership, Bistro, Bar, Café, Driving Range, Putting Green, Pro Shop, and 4 more.
Pupuke traces back to 1914, when a group of Auckland golfers formed the Takapuna Golf Club on leased land at Takapuna Domain, reached at the time by ferry across the harbour and then horse and cart along East Coast Road. The club was renamed Pupuke in 1918, and through the 1920s members built the course themselves, shaping fairways and greens by hand across the domain's gullies and scrubland.
The land the club plays on was renamed Centennial Park in 1940, marking a century since the signing of the Treaty of Waitangi, and Pupuke today leases 44.5 of the park's 73.5 hectares. The course settled into its split character over the decades that followed: one nine threading through native bush, the other opening onto views of the Hauraki Gulf, with the natural, undulating terrain that made construction difficult also giving the finished course its elevated, tricky greens. The clubhouse has since been renovated and now anchors the club's bar, café and bistro operations.
Pupuke operates as a semi-private club, mixing a members' program with visitor green-fee play. It has become known chiefly as a nursery for New Zealand golf talent, most notably Lydia Ko, who started playing there as a child before her professional career, and Mike Hendry, another New Zealand Open winner who came through the club. Junior coaching, family programs and the women's-focused She Loves Golf initiative underpin that reputation today.
