Southern Golf Club is an 18-hole par-72 private club at Keysborough on Melbourne's south-eastern Sandbelt. Its current site covers about 130 acres beside Braeside National Park, and the championship course measures just over 6,250 metres. The course was built in the late 1940s by Melbourne architect Sam Berriman.
For roughly its first three decades, nine holes sat on each side of Lower Dandenong Road; increasing road traffic led the club to acquire land farther south and consolidate all 18 holes on one parcel, with Peter Thomson and Michael Wolveridge responsible for replacement holes. OCM Golf was appointed in 2020 to prepare a masterplan intended to strengthen the course's Sandbelt characteristics, with physical work commencing in 2023. Southern is a private club: guests are primarily introduced by members, and non-member booking opportunities are limited.
The course is an 18-hole sandbelt golf course. It plays to par 72, 6,250m. Designed by Sam Berriman, the course originally opened in 1949. It is open to members and their guests. On-site facilities include Golf Shop, Driving Range, Practice Putting Greens, Short Game Practice Area, Warm-up Nets, Clubhouse, Locker Rooms, Members Bar, and 1 more.
Southern Golf Club traces its beginnings to 1937. The course associated with the present club was created in the late 1940s by Sam Berriman, a prolific Melbourne-area architect whose work also included significant involvement at Huntingdale and other Victorian clubs.
As Lower Dandenong Road developed from a quiet road into a major multi-lane route, operating nine holes on each side became impractical. Southern acquired additional land to the south in the late 1970s and commissioned the Thomson and Wolveridge design firm to create new holes, allowing all 18 to sit on one contiguous property. A modern clubhouse opened in 2003.
In 2020 the club engaged OCM Golf to produce a new course masterplan, with implementation beginning in 2023.
Southern remains a private members' club with restricted guest access. Its current par-72 layout measures just over 6,250 metres and occupies a 130-acre site bounded on much of its perimeter by Braeside National Park.
