About Te Ārai Links

Te Ārai Links is a coastal golf destination north of Auckland comprising two separate 18-hole walking links. The South Course, designed by Bill Coore and Ben Crenshaw, opened in October 2022 and is a par-72 layout routed through coastal sand dunes. The North Course, designed by Tom Doak, opened in October 2023 and plays to par 71.

Te Ārai's official site lists North Course yardages from 5,003 yards forward to 6,931 yards championship. The two layouts are deliberately different: the South has sixteen ocean-view holes and eight directly bordering the coast, while the North incorporates more inland golf and distinct green forms. Both use fescue turf and are walking-only.

The course is a links golf course. The course was designed by Bill Coore and Ben Crenshaw and Tom Doak. It is open to the public. On-site facilities include Driving Range, Putting Green, Short Game Area, Golf Shop, Caddie Service, Club Hire, Restaurant, Clubhouse, and 3 more.

Origins

Te Ārai Links was developed as a two-course coastal golf destination near Te Arai. The project paired two major modern architecture teams with separate layouts rather than creating interchangeable nines or a single 36-hole course.

Did You Know?
The South Course opened in October 2022 and the North followed only one year later, in October 2023.

Design Philosophy

Bill Coore and Ben Crenshaw routed the South Course through natural rolling sand dunes, using firm fescue turf, exposed sand and the existing coastal contours. Sixteen holes have ocean views and eight border directly on the sea. Tom Doak's North Course was intentionally made different, beginning and finishing at the ocean while spending more of its routing inland and using distinctive green shapes.

Development

The South Course opened in October 2022, followed by the North Course in October 2023. Accommodation, dining, practice facilities and separate course clubhouses have been developed around the two layouts.

Recognition

Both courses entered major world rankings quickly. Golf Digest's 2024 World's 100 Greatest placed the North at #36 and South at #40. GOLF Magazine's 2025/26 World Top 100 ranked the South #79 and North #98.

Today

Te Ārai Links operates as a walking-only two-course destination. Its golf facilities include two clubhouses, golf shops, a driving range, short-game area and a two-acre putting facility known as The Playground.
