Origins

Golf at Banff Springs began before the present Thompson course. William Thomson was brought from Winnipeg in 1910 and construction of a nine-hole course began in 1911, officially opening on 15 July. Expansion followed, and Donald Ross was engaged in 1919 to design an 18-hole course for the hotel.

Ross's layout opened on 1 May 1923.

Did You Know?
When Thompson's first nine opened in 1928, Banff Springs was described by the club as the most expensive golf course in the world at the time.

Design Philosophy

After Stanley Thompson's Jasper course drew acclaim, he was selected in 1927 to create a new Banff course intended to be the 'final word in golf'. His routing follows the Bow River and uses the mountain landscape as a fundamental part of the design.

Development

The first nine of Thompson's course and its new clubhouse opened in August 1928, with holes 10-18 opening in 1929. In 1989 Geoffrey Cornish and Bill Robinson completed the adjoining Tunnel Mountain nine, expanding the property to 27 holes. The hole rotation of the Stanley Thompson 18 was also changed in 1989 to the sequence used today.

Recognition

SCORE Magazine rated Banff Springs the top golf course in Western Canada in 1992, and Canada Post issued a stamp depicting the course in 1995.

Today

Fairmont operates both the Stanley Thompson 18 and Tunnel Mountain 9 during a seasonal May-to-October golf season.
