The Blue Monster at Trump National Doral is an 18-hole, par-72 resort and daily-fee course in Miami, Florida. The Doral resort opened on January 12, 1962, with the Blue Course among its original layouts. The PGA TOUR currently credits the design to Dick Wilson and Robert von Hagge, who was working in Wilson's firm at the time.
The course was substantially altered over subsequent decades, including a 1996 renovation associated with Raymond Floyd and a major 2013-14 reconstruction by Gil Hanse and Jim Wagner. Trump National Doral now lists the Blue Monster at 7,739 yards in its championship configuration; the 2026 PGA TOUR Cadillac Championship used the same par-72, 7,739-yard setup. The Florida State Golf Association rates the 7,590-yard Black tees at 77.4 with a slope of 146.
The course is an 18-hole resort golf course. It plays to par 72, 7,078m (7,739 yards). Designed by Dick Wilson and Robert Von Hagge, the course originally opened in 1962. It is semi-private, welcoming both members and visitors. On-site facilities include Driving Range, Lighted Driving Range, Putting Green, Short Game Area, Practice Bunkers, Golf Academy, Golf Lessons, Pro Shop, and 11 more.
The Blue Monster emerged from Alfred Kaskel's plan to transform roughly 2,400 acres of low-lying land west of Miami into the Doral Hotel and Country Club. Kaskel bought the property in 1959 and named Doral from a combination of the names Doris and Alfred. The resort opened on January 12, 1962 with the Blue Course, Red Course and a par-three Green Course.
The PGA TOUR now credits the Blue Monster's design to Dick Wilson and Robert von Hagge. Von Hagge was working as a principal designer in Wilson's office during this period before leaving the firm late in 1962. Doral staged its first PGA TOUR event during the same year it opened, with Billy Casper winning the inaugural Doral Country Club Open Invitational.
The original course translated Dick Wilson's Florida design methods onto a flat, wet site: excavated lakes supplied fill, greens were elevated for drainage and aerial approaches, and deep bunkering and water created much of the strategic challenge. Over time the course moved away from aspects of that original character. The most consequential modern intervention came after the Trump Organization acquired Doral in 2012.
Gil Hanse and Jim Wagner reshaped large parts of the course, creating new slopes and ridges, repositioning bunkers and excavating new water features. The closing stretch changed substantially: the 15th became a short par 3 to a peninsula-style green and water was brought much more strongly into play at the driveable 16th. The famous 18th was deliberately altered very little.
The Blue Monster has undergone several generations of changes. Its first major renovation was completed in 1996 and increased the bunker count from 106 to 117. According to the club's official history, those changes were poorly received by touring professionals, and several bunkers were removed only three years later.
Following the Trump Organization's 2012 acquisition of Doral, a resort-wide redevelopment included the extensive Hanse-Wagner reconstruction of the Blue Monster. Work began in 2013 and the revised course returned for the 2014 tournament season. Further tee additions have since lengthened the championship setup beyond the 7,590-yard rated Black tees; for the PGA TOUR's 2026 return the tournament course measured 7,739 yards, with six holes at least 24 yards longer than the previous TOUR configuration.
Few resort courses have been as closely identified with one professional tournament stop. The Blue Monster hosted PGA TOUR competition continuously from 1962 through 2016, first through the various iterations of the Doral Open and later through the World Golf Championships. Winners at Doral included Jack Nicklaus, Greg Norman and Tiger Woods.
After the PGA TOUR event left following 2016, the course hosted the LIV Golf Team Championship in 2022 and 2023, then LIV Golf Miami as a regular-season tournament in 2024 and 2025. In 2026 the PGA TOUR returned with the new Cadillac Championship, won by Cameron Young. Golf Digest continues to rank the Blue Monster among Florida's leading public-access courses, while its 18th remains the layout's most widely recognised individual hole.
The Blue Monster is the flagship course of Trump National Doral's four-course golf resort, alongside the Golden Palm, Red Tiger and Silver Fox. It is available to resort guests, daily-fee golfers and club members, with public tee times offered online. The current championship setup is 7,739 yards and par 72, while the Florida State Golf Association's rated Black tees measure 7,590 yards at 77.4/146.
The property supports golf with an LED-lit practice range, an 8,500-square-foot short-game green, putting facilities, the Trump Golf Academy, extensive golf retail and rental equipment. The broader resort includes accommodation, dining, spa and fitness facilities, tennis, pools and meeting and event spaces.
