Golf Course Architect
Gilbert “Gil” Hanse (born August 12, 1963) is an American golf course architect celebrated for his minimalist, terrain‑driven design approach and expertise in restoring classic courses while sensitively adapting them for modern play. He earned a BA from the University of Denver and a Master’s in Landscape Architecture from Cornell University, where he received the William Frederick Dreer Award and studied golf architecture in Britain and Ireland.
He founded Hanse Golf Course Design in 1993 and frequently collaborates with partner Jim Wagner and lead shaper Geoff Shackelford. ” Since the early 2000s, Hanse has designed original courses such as Rustic Canyon (California, 2002) and led acclaimed restorations including Southern Hills Country Club (Tulsa, renovation completed 2019), where he restored original Perry Maxwell features using historic photographs and strategic updates for championship golf.
His work spans high‑profile projects like the 2016 Rio Olympic Course, Merion, Winged Foot, and many more, earning him recognition as one of the most influential contemporary golf architects.
