Origins

The Caymanas course was conceived during the early 1950s and developed on roughly 116 acres in Saint Catherine that had previously been used for pineapple cultivation. Canadian architect Howard Watson designed the course, which the club states opened for play in 1958. A separate 'Established 1957' label appears on the club's course page, but the narrative explicitly identifies 1958 as the year play began.

Design Philosophy

Watson routed a parkland course through limestone hillocks and mature vegetation. Cottonwood and guango trees line and defend many fairways and greens, while elevated tees are a recurring characteristic. The official club description emphasises a layout intended to test a range of abilities rather than relying solely on length.

Development

During the 1960s and 1970s Caymanas became a prominent weekend sporting and social venue for Kingston society. Its competitive profile extended beyond domestic golf through events including Shell's Wonderful World of Golf.

Recognition

The club records that Caymanas was regarded internationally as one of the better courses in the hemisphere when it opened. Its subsequent tournament record includes the Jamaica Open and the Hoerman Cup, part of the Caribbean Amateur Golf Championship.

Today

Caymanas continues as a semi-private parkland club with an 18-hole par-72 course. Its official facilities include a putting green and mini-range, rental clubs and carts, caddies, and a hilltop clubhouse containing restaurant and bar facilities and a swimming pool.
