About Constant Spring Golf Course

Constant Spring Golf Club is an 18-hole course in Kingston, Saint Andrew, with roots dating to 1902. The original course had nine holes and was expanded to 18 during the 1930s. Scottish-Canadian architect Stanley Thompson is credited with its design or development.

The present layout is a relatively compact par 70 measuring about 6,094 yards, with a published slope of 127. Its established character is defined by narrow fairways, bunkering, gullies and ponds rather than modern championship-scale length. The course sits within the Kingston metropolitan area and has long functioned as both a golf and social club.

Origins

Constant Spring's golf history reaches back to 1902, when a nine-hole course was established in the Constant Spring area of Kingston. Historical accounts connect the course with the former Constant Spring Hotel and the surrounding property. The layout predates the modern Constant Spring Golf Club organisation: one history of the hotel property records the golf course becoming the Constant Spring Golf Club in 1940.

Design Philosophy

Stanley Thompson is credited with the course, whose enduring characteristics are narrow fairways, strategically placed bunkers, gullies and ponds. At just over 6,000 yards, its difficulty comes more from placement and the compact routing than sheer length.

Development

The original nine-hole course was expanded into an 18-hole layout during the 1930s. Published modern course data lists the resulting layout at par 70 and approximately 6,094 yards.

Today

Constant Spring remains an active Kingston golf club and is listed by both Visit Jamaica and the Jamaica Golf Association. Current tourism information lists practice facilities, instruction, equipment hire, carts, caddies, a pro shop and food-and-beverage facilities. The Jamaica Golf Association also uses the club as a location for membership administration.
