About Flinders Golf Club

Flinders Golf Club occupies clifftop ground at Flinders on Victoria's Mornington Peninsula. Golf on the site dates to the nineteenth century, when English and Scottish workers associated with the local cable station carved four rough holes into the clifftop. The club developed from those beginnings and its history includes an important 1926 visit by Alister MacKenzie.

MacKenzie inspected the course, prepared a report and plan, and recommended changes including alterations to The Coffin, new holes in the top paddock, and improvements to greens, fairways and bunkers. Financial constraints meant his scheme was implemented gradually rather than wholesale. The present course is an 18-hole layout, with the men's black tees measuring 5,277 metres at par 69, scratch rating 69 and slope 125.

The course is an 18-hole links golf course. It plays to par 69, 5,277m, course rating 69 and slope rating 125. The course was designed by Alister MacKenzie. It is open to the public. On-site facilities include Golf shop, Electric cart hire, Club hire, Pull buggy hire.

Origins

The beginnings of golf at Flinders predate the formal club. During the late nineteenth century the small coastal settlement included a cable station, established in 1869 to connect Tasmania with mainland Australia. English and Scottish immigrants working there carved four rough golf holes along the clifftop.

David Maxwell, an accomplished golfer and inaugural champion of Melbourne Golf Club, recognised the potential of the ground and organised volunteer labour to extend the primitive course.

Design Philosophy

Alister MacKenzie's 1926 report became an important influence on the course. He proposed altering The Coffin, adding two holes in the top paddock, building up greens and improving fairways and bunkers. He also recommended eliminating Niagara and Spion Kop because he considered the beach sequence detrimental to the pace of play.

The club rejected that particular recommendation but treated the wider plan as a long-term guide.

Development

MacKenzie visited in November 1926 while in Australia for his work at Royal Melbourne. Flinders arranged his services for £100, funded by contributions from members and friends. Because implementing the complete plan was beyond the club's resources, David Maxwell and successive greenkeepers worked progressively on elements of it over subsequent years.

Today

Flinders remains an 18-hole club on its historic clifftop site and accepts visiting golfers, including access to specified member competition times for visitors holding a Golf Australia handicap.
