The Barwon Heads Golf Club's main course is an 18-hole coastal links at Barwon Heads, Victoria. The club was founded in 1907, but the present links dates from the club's move to its current coastal site: Victor East, then the professional at Royal Melbourne, designed the course, nine holes were playable by November 1921 and the full 18 were open by Easter 1922. The club's current Golf Australia ratings list the men's Black tees at par 70, scratch rating 72 and slope 125; additional rated tees are available for men and women.
Barwon Heads remains private in character but allows limited green-fee access on selected days, with stronger access for guests staying in the heritage clubhouse. Published guest green fees are currently A$250 Monday-Friday and A$300 on peak weekends and public holidays. The club also has a separate nine-hole par-3 course, which should not be merged into the championship course's 18-hole statistics.
The course is an 18-hole links golf course. It plays to par 70, course rating 72 and slope rating 125. Designed by Victor East, the course originally opened in 1922. It is semi-private, welcoming both members and visitors. On-site facilities include Accommodation, Restaurant, Practice Facility, Pro Shop, Par-3 Course.
The club first met formally in 1907 and initially played north of Barwon Heads township. In 1919 members decided to move to coastal land south of town. A government-land lease followed in 1920, together with the acquisition of Hopgood's Farm.
The land was largely treeless, sandy and naturally undulating, characteristics the club considered genuine links country.
Victor East, then professional at Royal Melbourne, designed the new course with the explicit intention of producing a links rather than a heavily constructed inland layout. Work began in May 1920. Nine holes were playable by November 1921 and all 18 by Easter 1922.
Alister MacKenzie visited in 1926 and advised the club on the course.
In 1929 the first six holes were moved, freeing land near the clubhouse for what became the club's separate par-3 course. The main clubhouse had opened in December 1924 and later became a significant part of the club's identity, including on-site accommodation.
The main course remains an 18-hole links. The club is private in nature but makes selected tee times available to green-fee visitors and provides greater access to overnight clubhouse guests.
