St Andrews Beach Golf Course is a fully public 18-hole, par-70 links-style course in the Cups region of Victoria's Mornington Peninsula. The official club credits Tom Doak as designer, with reputable architecture histories also documenting Michael Clayton's involvement in the project. The current official hole guide totals 6,050 metres from its longest listed markers.
Doak's routing was built around the site's existing dunes and contours with unusually little alteration to the natural ground, an approach he has cited as a strong example of his minimalist design philosophy. The course originally operated as the Gunnamatta members' course before becoming public-access golf in 2009. St Andrews Beach now operates seven days a week and includes The Glasshouse golf shop and licensed café, warm-up putting and pitching greens, practice nets and on-course accommodation.
The course is an 18-hole links golf course. It plays to par 70, 6,050m. The course was designed by Mike Clayton and Tom Doak. It is open to the public. On-site facilities include Golf Shop, Café, Putting Green, Pitching Green, Practice Nets, Golf Cart Hire, Club Hire, Accommodation.
The project began as a private golf development in the Mornington Peninsula's Cups country. Tom Doak routed the Gunnamatta course through sandy, heavily contoured ground, working with Australian architect Michael Clayton and other design associates.
The layout is a prominent example of minimalist architecture. Existing ridges, hollows, dunes and natural sandy areas dictated much of the routing, and Doak has specifically noted how little fairway contouring required alteration.
The original development contemplated a second course called Fingal and a composite championship routing, but the second course was not completed. Gunnamatta later transitioned from a members' course to full public access in 2009. More recently the course added The Glasshouse golf operations centre, shop and café.
St Andrews Beach has remained highly ranked among Australian public-access courses and continues to appear in national and international course rankings.
The course is fully public, open seven days a week and supported by practice facilities, food and beverage service, equipment hire and on-course accommodation.
