Golf Course Architect
Bob Cupp (Robert Erhard Cupp, 1939–2016) was an American golf course architect, artist, author, musician, blacksmith and mentor. After earning a BA from the University of Miami and an MFA from the University of Alaska (and an associate’s in turf management), he worked as a professional golfer and in advertising before joining Jack Nicklaus’s design team as senior designer for around 15 years.
, completing more than 140 courses and numerous renovations, including the Liberty National Golf Club (Jersey City) in partnership with Tom Kite and The Landing course (at Reynolds Lake Oconee, originally known as Port Armor, in Georgia). Cupp served as president of the American Society of Golf Course Architects in 2012–13 and was Golf World’s first‑ever Golf Architect of the Year in 1992.
His designs have hosted over 50 national and international tournaments. Beyond golf, he authored a novel and a nonfiction book on golf architecture, illustrated, built furniture, played guitar, sang, and pursued numerous creative passions.
