Golf Course Architect
Severiano “Seve” Ballesteros (1957–2011) was a celebrated Spanish golfer who, beyond his extraordinary playing career, also embarked on a respected parallel path as a golf course architect. While his fame stems from his five major championships and transformative role in European golf, he designed and co‑designed numerous courses internationally, beginning in the early 1980s.
His first golf architecture work was in Narita, Japan (1982, with Dave Thomas), followed by several in Spain (including Novo Sancti Petri in Cádiz) and Japan, and later projects like Real Novo Sancti Petri, Los Arqueros and others through his firm Trajectory. Among his last and most personal designs was Golf Santa Marina in Cantabria, inaugurated in 2001, where he harmonized strategic play with the natural landform, reflecting his philosophy of working with—not against—the terrain.
