Killeen is the championship 18-hole course at Killarney Golf & Fishing Club on the shores of Lough Leane. The club itself dates to 1893, but Killeen was created after additional land was acquired in 1968. Eddie Hackett and Dr William 'Billy' O'Sullivan designed the new course, which was constructed in 1969-70 and opened for play in 1971.
Later modifications included work by David Jones before the 1991 Irish Open and a substantial Donald Steel redesign completed in 2006. The current official course information lists Killeen at 6,614 metres, or 7,233 yards, and par 72. Water is a recurring feature across the lakeside routing.
The course is an 18-hole parkland golf course. It plays to par 72, 6,614m (7,233 yards). Designed by Dr William O'Sullivan and Eddie Hackett, the course originally opened in 1971. It is open to the public. On-site facilities include Clubhouse, Pro Shop, Golf academy, Practice facilities, Restaurant, Bar, Function Room.
Killarney Golf & Fishing Club was founded in 1893 and initially played on the Earl of Kenmare's Deerpark. The club eventually moved to its present lakeside property. Additional land acquired in 1968 allowed a new course to be developed, with Eddie Hackett and Dr William O'Sullivan designing what became Killeen.
Killeen was routed as a lakeside parkland championship course, with woodland and Lough Leane defining much of its character. Water features are incorporated throughout the routing rather than being confined to a small number of holes.
Construction took place in 1969 and 1970 and Killeen opened in 1971. David Jones subsequently made changes before the 1991 Irish Open. Donald Steel later undertook a broader modernisation, lengthening and altering the course before it reopened in 2006.
Killeen's tournament history is headed by four Irish Opens. Nick Faldo won at Killarney in 1991 and 1992, while Ross Fisher won in 2010 and Simon Dyson in 2011. The wider club has also staged major amateur events.
Killeen is one of two 18-hole championship courses at Killarney Golf & Fishing Club, alongside Mahony's Point. The club also operates a nine-hole Academy Course. Killeen is currently listed at 7,233 yards, par 72, and is open to visitor play.
