The Heritage Golf & Country Club at Chirnside Park contains two separate 18-hole championship courses rather than one single layout. The St John Course is a Jack Nicklaus Signature design that opened in 2000 and extends to approximately 6,670 metres; Nicklaus Design classifies the club as private. The Henley Course, designed by Melbourne architect Tony Cashmore, opened in 2006 and provides a substantially different, more open layout across Yarra River flats and wetland terrain.
The club has undertaken significant course-restoration work in recent years, including extensive bunker renovation and drainage improvements. Nicklaus Design's formal endorsement of St John was restored in 2023 after the course had lost recognition in 2016. Both courses subsequently returned to Australian Top 100 discussion and Heritage has hosted the Heritage Classic on the Challenger PGA Tour of Australasia.
Designed by Jack Nicklaus and Tony Cashmore, the course originally opened in 2000. It is open to members and their guests. On-site facilities include Driving range, Putting greens, Chipping area, Practice bunker, Target greens, Pro shop, Clubhouse, Restaurant, and 2 more.
Heritage was developed on the edge of Melbourne's Yarra Valley around an ambitious private-club concept. The Jack Nicklaus-designed St John Course opened in 2000 and quickly established the club's identity.
St John is an American-style parkland design with broad fairways, water carries, shaped bunkering and substantial elevation movement. Henley, designed by Tony Cashmore, deliberately contrasts with it: the second course is more open and naturalistic, with extensive use of river flats, wetlands and rugged bunkering.
Henley opened in 2006, giving Heritage two distinct 18-hole courses. After a period of declining course presentation and membership, substantial restoration work was undertaken. Drainage was improved, bunkers were rebuilt and Nicklaus Design reviewed St John.
The Nicklaus Signature endorsement was formally reinstated in 2023.
St John was ranked 32nd in Australia by Australian Golf Digest in 2004. Following restoration work, both Heritage courses returned to national Top 100 discussion.
Heritage operates both courses as a private club and tournament venue, with extensive practice facilities and continuing investment in course presentation.
