About Royal Gulf Club Bharein

The Royal Golf Club in Riffa, Bahrain, is centred on the 18-hole, par-72 Montgomerie Course, a 7,102-yard championship layout created by Colin Montgomerie with Robin Hiseman of European Golf Design. It replaced the earlier Riffa Golf Club course as part of the Riffa Views development; the old course had opened in 1999, while the redesigned Royal Golf Club began operating under its new identity around the end of 2008 and officially opened its doors on 1 January 2009. Members and visitors are both accepted.

The property also contains the separate Wee Monty nine-hole par-3 course, which is not merged into the championship course statistics here. Practice and club facilities include a golf academy, TrackMan driving range, golf shop, restaurants and cafés. The championship course hosted the European Tour's inaugural Volvo Golf Champions in 2011 and returned to top-level professional tournament golf with the Bahrain Championship on the DP World Tour from 2024.

The course is an 18-hole desert golf course. It plays to par 72, 6,494m (7,102 yards). Designed by Colin Montgomerie and Robin Hiseman, the course originally opened in 2009. It is open to the public. On-site facilities include Golf Academy, Driving Range, Golf Shop, Restaurant, Cafe, Par 3 Course, Putting Green, Golf Lessons.

Origins

Bahrain International Golf Course Company was formed in 1994 with the aim of establishing Bahrain's first championship-standard golf course. Riffa Golf Club opened in 1999 as Bahrain's first grass golf course. The much larger Riffa Views residential development later prompted a complete rethink of the golf property rather than a modest renovation of the existing course.

Did You Know?
None of the holes from the original Riffa Golf Club course were retained in the championship-course redesign.

Design Philosophy

Colin Montgomerie and Robin Hiseman of European Golf Design created an entirely new championship layout within the expanded Riffa Views site. Contemporary architecture reporting notes that none of the old holes were retained, although the clubhouse area and some broad relationships to the earlier site remained. The design incorporated natural rock formations, wadis and existing oil and gas infrastructure into a strategic desert layout.

Development

The new course was substantially complete in 2008, with the Riffa Views Invitational marking the transformed venue. The Royal Golf Club identity followed the redevelopment, and the club officially opened its doors on 1 January 2009. The property also includes the separate Wee Monty nine-hole par-3 course and a substantial golf academy and practice complex.

Recognition

International tournament golf quickly became part of the club's identity. The European Tour staged the inaugural Volvo Golf Champions here in January 2011. Top-level tour golf returned in 2024 with the Bahrain Championship, which continued in subsequent seasons.

Today

The Royal Golf Club remains the principal championship golf venue in Bahrain and welcomes both members and visitors. The Montgomerie Course is complemented by the Wee Monty, a golf academy, floodlit practice facilities, retail, dining and country-club amenities.
