in environmental plant physiology from the University of Vermont, he launched a prolific career in golf architecture, initially under Jack Kidwell and later in partnership with Dana Fry (1988–2012), followed by work with his son Christopher at Hurdzan Golf Design. He is known for environmentally sensitive design, having created North America’s first Environmental Demonstration Golf Course and authored seminal books on golf course architecture.
