The West Course was the sole venue for several early Australian Opens, including Jim Ferrier's win in 1939. Since the Composite Course was created for the 1959 Canada Cup, however, Royal Melbourne's biggest modern events -- the 1998, 2011 and 2019 Presidents Cups, multiple World Cups of Golf, and most Australian Opens played since the 1970s -- have been staged over that blended 12-West/6-East routing rather than the West Course alone. Because the Composite draws holes from both courses, tournament results from that era should not be credited to the West Course exclusively. · Royal Melbourne's West Course has long been rated the No. 1 golf course in Australia, and it is regularly placed among the top ten courses in the world by major ranking panels including Golf Digest and Top 100 Golf Courses.
